La pasada noche del jueves 29 de mayo tuve el enorme privilegio de asistir al primer concierto en Nueva York, y en los estados Unidos, del extraordinario grupo argentino Aca Seca Trio. Juan Quintero (guitarra y voz), Andrés Beeuwsaert (teclas y voz) y Mariano Cantero (percusión y voz), tocaron muchos de mis temas favoritos, todos perfectamente ejecutados y recibidos con excitación y cariño por un público entregado en Joe's Pub.

    Admiro muchísimo a estos tres maravillosos músicos por su visión y por su coraje en perseguirla incluso si la lógica pareciera decirles "posiblemente no tendrán éxito tocando una música que no es 'esto' o 'aquello'" pero, en el fondo, nada de esto importa porque están haciendo algo que es, para mis oídos, completamente único en el mundo. Lo que hacen es muy especial. No tienes que ser músico para apreciarlo, y tampoco tienes que hablar español para sentir las canciones. Cuánto admiro su capacidad para decir tanto en una canción de 3:30 minutos. ¡Artistas como yo necesitamos mucho más tiempo para contar una historia!

    Cuando observo a Juan Quintero tocar esos increíblemente complejos pasajes de guitarra clásica y cantar a la vez, me parece imposible. Cuando canta no ves gestos exagerados ni contorsiones faciales, sólo la voz y la letra. Es una lección de lo maravilloso que puede ser un enfoque tan minimalista.

    Los elementos que hacen grande a la música nunca cambian. Para mí, los grandes grupos, independientemente del género, siempre tocan música que posee una determinada "onda" y "actitud". Juan, Andrés y Mariano gestionan estos paisajes sonoros como si fueran uno solo, como si respiraran al unísono, y los sutiles cambios rítmicos se suceden suavemente. Su uso de un amplio rango de dinámicas, un elemento pasado por alto muy a menudo, mejora lo que extraen de cada canción. Los colores y texturas percusivas que Mariano crea para la música son especiales y únicos. ¿Es un baterista? ¿un percusionista? Encajarle en una categoría no tiene ninguna importancia. Él tiene un concepto para Aca Seca, y nadie podría hacerlo mejor.

    Dado que ellos van a tocar el Spoleto Festival de Charleston, Carolina del Sur, los días 30 y 31 de mayo, sólo puedo exhortar a todos en esa área a, POR FAVOR, hacer el esfuerzo e irlos a escuchar. El martes 3 de junio tocarán en el Chesapeake Arts Center en Brooklyn Park, Maryland, antes de ir al oeste. El viernes 6 de junio ofrecerán un show en el Teatro de las Artes de Burbank, California y el 8 de junio estarán también en el Blue Whale de Los Angeles. Espero que todos allí asistan también. ¡¡¡Háganlo!!!

    Supongo que podría colgar aquí un montón de vídeos de conciertos suyos de YouTube, pero he elegido una canción que no tocaron en Joe's Pub. Es una de mis favoritas. Se titula "Hurry" y fue compuesta por el uruguayo Hugo Fattoruso.     Last night, Thursday, May 29th, I had the great privilege of attending the first concert in New York, and the USA, by Argentina's extraordinary group, Aca Seca Trio. Comprised of Juan Quintero (guitar/voice); Andrés Beeuwsaert (keys/voice); and Mariano Cantero (percussion/voice), they performed many of my favorites pieces, and everything they played was beautifully executed, and received with excitement and love from an adoring audience at Joe's Pub.

    I greatly admire these three wonderful musicians for their vision, and the courage to pursue it, even if logic would seem to be saying to them, "you can't possibly succeed playing music that is neither 'this' nor 'that' - but, in the end, none of this matters, because they are doing something that is, to these ears, completely unique on this earth. What they are doing is so very special. You don't have to be a musician to appreciate it, and you don't even have to speak Spanish to feel the songs. How much I admire the fact that they can say so much in a 3:30 song - and artists like me need so much more time to tell the story!

    I watch Juan Quintero play these incredibly complex classical guitar passages, and sing at the same time. It just seems impossible to me. What is so wonderful to see is that when he sings there are no overstated or grand gestures, no facial contortions, just a voice and the lyrics. It's a lesson in just how wonderful a minimalist and completely natural approach can be.

    The elements of great music never really change. For me, great groups, no matter what the genre, always seem to play music that possesses "mood" with an "attitude." Juan, Andrés and Mariano negotiate these sonic landscapes as one, as if they breath together as one, and the subtle shifts in rhythms pass by without any attention being drawn to the specifics. Their usage of a broad range of dynamics, an element far too often overlooked, only enhances what they bring out of each and every song. The percussive colors and textures that Mariano creates for the music are special and unique. Is he a drummer? Is he a percussionist? To try to define this is of no importance at all. He has a concept for Aca Seca, and no one could do it any better.

    As they headed off for performances on May 30th-31st at the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, South Carolina, I can only urge everyone in that area to PLEASE make the effort, and go to hear them. Tuesday, June 3rd, they play the Chesapeake Arts Center in Brooklyn Park, Maryland before heading west. On Friday, June 6th, they will perform in Burbank, California at Teatro de Las Artes, and then, they will also be coming to the Blue Whale in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday, June 8th, and I hope that everyone there turns out to hear them as well. Do it!!!

    I suppose that I could post any number of their YouTube concert videos here, but I have chosen a song that they did not perform at Joe's Pub. It is one of my personal favorites, and is titled "Hurry" which was composed by Uruguay's Hugo Fattoruso. I hope that anyone who has never heard Aca Seca Trio will enjoy this piece, and will then explore the others that are available. Buen viaje Juan, Andrés, y Mariano!!!
