Hi Steve, I am listening to your solo on "Glamour Profession," there just isn't anything like a 335!

Hi Steve, Was listening to "Your Secret's Safe With Me" from Michael Franks the other day. Such an underrated tune. Superb guitar work from you, as usual, and I love the overall Rob Mounsey production quality. Very crisp and clean. Music doesn't sound like that anymore, at least not in the mainstream. Ironic how during the 1980s there was so much optimism about what the future would hold, yet here we are in the 2020s, people are longing for the past, even those who didn't actually experience it. Hope you're doing well. Take care, Michael

Hi Steve. Just a quick note to thank you for your wonderful interview at NYU. Such great stories and so much good advice for those young, aspiring musicians. I was inspired and bought a few of your CDs! I'm the same age as you and play saxophone. I liked what you said about "finding your voice." Take care! Rich

Hi Steve, Just dropping you a line to say that I've just discovered you through your "LOCAL COLOR" album with Rob Mounsey. I was born in 1990, and it's fairly rare for me to find music I connect with from before I was born. I love the album (truly fantastic) and will be digging for some of your other stuff soon. Well done on creating music that still means something 30+ years down the track. Thanks for your work! Cheers, Bill

Dear Steve, I'm writing to express my gratitude for everything that you have shared with your amazing musical talents. I'm located in California, a bit north of San Diego, although born and raised in the Berkeley/Oakland area. The San Francisco Bay area was a magical place for live music in the '70s and early '80s, and I'm sure well before that. I was born in 1960, so I missed out on some of the pioneers that visited before my time hitting the clubs and concerts. My first experience hearing your music was sometime around 1978. KJAZ up in Northern California played "An Eye Over Autumn" one evening, and I was struck with an overwhelming feeling of joy, happiness and absolute inspiration. To this day I still get that happy feeling when hearing your compositions and GUITAR playing. You are an incredible artist and I am sure a wonderful person.
I wish you and yours wonderful things and hope all of your future goals and good dreams come true. Cordially, Russ

Hello Steve, just wanted to say you are my favorite jazz guitarist. I think your phrasing, chording approach and tone are beautiful and unique. In the NYU Interview, your humility and deference to other greats is refreshing. I studied Jazz Guitar in undergrad school, and was fortunate to take lessons with Joe Pass. Got to meet Jim Hall. I gravitate to playing more rock/fusion stuff - Eric Johnson, Scott Henderson, etc. I really enjoy all your albums "CROSSINGS," "PATCHWORK," etc. It's rare to find guitar led/oriented albums that remain as interesting as yours do. Your outro solo on "My Rival" is sublime - just as impactful as L.C.'s "Kid Charlemagne." Thanks for all your great work, very much takes me to another place listening. Take care, Matt

Hi Steve, love the website! Several years ago, you were kind enough to email back and forth with me about your great guitar work on Donald Fagen's "Shanghai Confidential." Always appreciated that, and since I've been enjoying it again today, I just wanted to say thanks again & love the work. Keep up the pentatonic harmonics! :)

Hi Steve, Been meaning to contact you for awhile now. I've followed your music career for decades. Seen you live a few times @ 7th Ave. So. w/ Eyewitness, the night Steve Jordan was late for the first set. With Elements & Caribbean Jazz Project, both at the Bottom Line. I always enjoyed your releases, "THE GREEN FIELD" is my personal favorite, and your last 4 CDs as well. Your website is also so enjoyable, I enjoy reading it, and look forward to any recent news updates. Keep 'em coming! Best, Dan

Dear Steve, I'm a guitar player and teacher from Vienna, Austria. Born in 1964, raised with Beatles & Stones, later Charlie Parker, Mahavishnu, Weather Report, you name it.... And, off course, Steely Dan! Tried to catch all those Carlton solos and chords, moved on to Robben Ford, Carlos Rios, Scott Henderson, all those great Jazz players (Montgomery, Pass, Hall, Benson, Martino, Sco', Metheny....)
But, whenever someone asks me about my favorite solo (and my favorite sound :-)), it's your work on "Glamour Profession"! Just listened to it again, and wanted to thank you! Kind regards, Michael

Hi Mr. Khan, huge fan. I'm not sure how I first stumbled upon your music, but I am glad I did. The first thing I heard was "Blades" on "MODERN TIMES," then I realized that album is live! Wow, Very good! I've turned you on to my dad as well, you and whatever band(s) you are playing with on these albums are solid, and a lot of them are live/one take. Anyway, I'm just an 18 year old kid from Ohio wondering if I'll ever get to see Steve Khan live! Or at the very least send him an e-mail, have a good day!

Steve, Thank you for "Duck Ankles." I have been a David Sanborn fan since I first heard him in the early '80s when I was a young aspiring alto saxophonist. I have been diligently working through his discography before and during the pandemic to understand more about his development as an artist, and I keep coming back to the incredible composing on that first album, "TAKING OFF." All who contributed to the album wrote some amazing compositions that came to life with amazing personnel on the sessions. I have enjoyed transcribing the album and crank "Duck Ankles" driving around town with the windows down. It is a great chart! If you could ever find and share the arrangement, it would make a killer big band arrangement as well. Sincerely, Roberto

Still have my tickets, waiting for the postponed Steely Dan, Steve Winwood concert tour to be definitively re-scheduled - and it got me thinking: "Are either bands looking for an ace guitarist? If so they need to get ahold of you ASAP Steve Khan!" At any rate, I'm really curious now that we're opening up post-COVID, if you will be performing musically live in any way, shape or form this year? Any upcoming gigs?

Hi Steve, I am writing from Germany. Please excuse my poor English. on your fantastic CD "PUBLIC ACCESS" - Track 4, "Silent Screen" - I think that your guitar sound is a little bit like that of Allan Holdsworth. I hope you understand this message, and I will be happy when you answer me. I was always a great fan of Allan H., and was very sad when he died. Best wishes, Achim

Greetings, Steve! I just got into work and the first song I put on was "Glamour Profession" by Steely Dan. I'm mesmerized by your playing on this tune. I have been playing it daily for the last 5-6 days. I'm writing to say how much I enjoy your playing and that you must know your stuff if you can make guitars and amps sound that good. I'll be doing a deep dive into your career and works over the weekend! Hope you are well - hope you see this. Best wishes, Pete Sorensen

Been enjoying your wonderful jazz/fusion music ever since I first heard "THE BLUE MAN." What glorious tone! Even looking to buy an Ibanez DCF10 pedal now. Thanks for all the years of great tunes. One quick question: I heard somewhere in a forum, or on some website or on some LP's liner notes that you used to/or at one time played/recorded your guitar with these huge slabs of granite or something like that on either side of you. Am I just dreaming this? Or is there some kernel of truth in this "rumour"? Thanks!

Hi Steve, I've listened to a lot of your music during the pandemic, and picked up some older releases, "ARROWS" and "TWO FOR THE ROAD" at local record stores. I also stumbled across "STARCLIMBER," a Mitch Farber release featuring you and Randy Brecker. Your music has made the semi-isolation more bearable! - Wayne

Happy birthday to you, dear Steve. Heard "Some Sharks" back in the late '80s on the radio. Since then, you've always been a favourite musician of mine, and I have collected all of your recordings. I hope you and your family stay healthy. Keep on making wonderful music.... Uli

Finally was able to listen to your "Bleeding Orchid"(Chick Corea). What a great arrangement! Fantastic Rhodes sound and the guitar sounds absolutely beautiful also. Your recordings always sound so amazing. The music and the playing are always exceptional, and there is just this amazing elegance to the sound. I have that Joe Farrell record, but I've never paid enough attention to it. I'm going to have to go back and revisit the original version now. Really great Steve. It's a wonderful tribute and thanks for sharing.

Hi Steve, I appreciate that difficult choices were made in the sequencing of the recent BGO reissue release of "PUBLIC ACCESS"/"HEADLINE"/"CROSSINGS" but why was "Dedicated To You" left off the CD? This means that "CROSSINGS" was the only complete album, which is slightly disappointing. Long time fan living in UK (so have only seen you with Weather Update many moons ago!) Cheers, Ian

Hi Steve, I just watched/listened to your conversation with Dr. David Schroeder on YouTube. Just wanted to say thanks for being so open and honest. You articulated so well the insecurities and self-doubt that so many of us experience. I relate so much to that feeling of trying to "catch-up." I found it very moving. Hope you are well and managing OK in this strange time. All the best, Rick H

Hi Steve, I'm reading your website for the first time, and I agree with all your FAVORITES. LOL. Good to see you have great taste beyond just music. SO GLAD Spotify finally has your body of work now. Found myself completely immersed again, like I was while at Musician's Institute back in '89, when I first discovered your music - your sound. I was hoping to see if you might be touring in the States any time this year or next? I just wanted to express my gratitude for how your music makes me feel. I'm a drummer by the way. Playing along with Steve Jordan is fun, and Dennis Chambers? Challenging. :) I do hope to catch you live one day. Cheers, Allen

Hello Steve, Your music has been in my ears for so many years! I just came upon your website after looking up info about Steve Swallow. It was a great surprise to read your page about the trio with Scofield. I was delighted to read about Westbeth, as I had been taking lessons from Jeff Andrews at Westbeth right up until his death. Cool to have more history attached to that building. Hope you are well, and thanks for this wealth of information. Sincerely, Wyeth

Steve, Sorry to bother again. I just wanted to mention the incredible "The Journey Home" track from "PATCHWORK." As I've been listening to the album over the last few weeks, this track keeps coming back to me. What a great arrangement, great playing. And to take such a great song (but somewhat forgotten) from Keith Jarrett's wonderful "MY SONG" album, both a great and very challenging idea. Stay well and safe, Darrell

Hello, Steve - First, thank you for the decades of music and for helping to open my mind to jazz 30 years ago. We had your "PUBLIC ACCESS" CD in my college radio station's library, and I used to play tracks from it on my weekly show. P.S. Love the website. I have a bunch of new (old) music to listen to now. - Chris

Hi Steve, I just ran across your interview with David Schroeder(NYU) and wanted to thank you for that, and tell you I really enjoyed it. I have been a fan for many years and appreciate your books and this site as well. Did you record any sessions for Hanna-Barbera cartoons? Strange question, but I seem to remember a "GUITAR PLAYER" article about that - and was always curious, or if I was confused or dreaming?

Hi Steve. The other day I listened to the interview that you gave to Leo Sidran in December, 2014 as part of his "The Third Story" podcast. I very much enjoyed what you said about "feeling mediocre at times" and how important it is to "focus on the things that we are good at." These comments and many other of your statements resonated with me. Thanks for this, I will share some parts of your statements with my students (engineering students, though).
Back in 2001, you were kind enough to send me a copy of the Thelonious Monk Tribute album for which you contributed a duet with Donald Fagen of Monk's "Reflections." Best regards, Klaus

Fan since I was 16. I'm 59 today. Listening to Thelonious Monk, and I just recognized a song he was playing that you had recorded. Hope you are doing well. You provided so much music to my life experience. I play one of your records, and remember where I was, and what I was doing. The best thing about cool jazz music is the memories it brings back. Thanks for reading this and thanks for playing and sharing.
